The Specimen images first began as a photographic exploration of the construction waste generated by suburban sprawl. However, as the work progressed, the attention that I had previously only paid to construction refuse, began to be focused on all types of cast off material. Thus I began collecting, photographing and cataloging these found objects as a visual diary or road map to my own life. Through the use of ambiguous scale, as well as the removal of environmental cues, it is possible for each object to become something outside of itself. No attempt is made to create a seamless world within the images. Rather, the true nature of the photograph, as an orchestrated display is revealed. Issues concerning the examination of decay, the possibility of value beneath a tarnished surface, reinvention and the changing nature of perception in relation to context are at the forefront of the work.
